My Stained Glass art Class
Welcome back to my blog! I figured that I would tell you a little bit about what I am working on currently. Every Thursday evening I am taking a class and restoring original 100 year old stained glass windows that are located in the great hall. Here is a picture of one of the windows I am currently working on restoring.
Each "kite" needs to be taken down by hand on a 3 story scaffold. So far i have take out a few of these kites and it is quite a scary task. The lead tracking that holds all the pieces of glass together is so old and pitted that it sometimes can not withstand its own weight, and small pieces fall out to the ground 3 stories below. We however cover most of the window with tape before removing the window to try and avoid pieces falling out, but none the less, some pieces still fall to the ground. Sometimes the break, sometimes they don’t.
Once the windows are out, we take out all the old lead and lay all the puzzle pieces on a carbon rubbing of the original design. Once all the pieces have been cleaned of old soot, tar, paint, and caulk, we can re-cane the glass into the lead tracking following the carbon rubbings we took before we took apart the window.
I am working on this window with my co-worker Kathy, and we are not completely done this window yet, but could finish the cane of the window by tomorrow evening. After that we can solder and seal the window and reinstall the window into the great hall.
Well... I have a midterm tomorrow, and I feel its time to go to bed. I will talk to you all later.
Take Care and God Bless
~Reed
